Hingham Municipal Lighting Installs FLO EV Chargers

Hingham Makes Valuable Investment in Charging Infrastructure Amidst EV Revolution

HINGHAM, Mass. January 12, 2023 – Hingham Municipal Lighting Plant (HMLP) announced it has installed EV charging stations from FLO, a leading North American EV charging network operator and smart charging solutions provider. The collaboration will bring charging solutions to the historic town of nearly 25,000, thanks to a state grant.

“This was an opportunity to offer the Hingham community an option for public charging without a large investment of ratepayer dollars,” said Thomas Morahan, General Manager at HMLP. “We hope the new charging stations will attract EV drivers to Hingham businesses and make electrification more accessible to customers that cannot install their own charging station at home.”

The four FLO CoRe+™ dual port level-2 EV charging stations, located at 62 Water St., 274 South St., and 28 Bare Cove Park Drive were funded by a MassEVIP grant from the Massachusetts Department of Energy Resources (DOER). The charging stations are currently up and running and will service EV drivers 24 hours a day, seven days a week. It currently costs $0.22 per kWh to charge at any of the stations, and residents can download the FLO app to see each station’s live status.

“As drivers across the country choose to go electric, making smart investments in local charging infrastructure has become even more important,” said Rose Lenoff, Business Development Manager, Smart Cities and Government of FLO. “We are pleased to have the opportunity to help the residents of Hingham recharge their EVs with ease and confidence. We look forward to growing this partnership in the years to come as Hingham’s residents continue to embrace the electric transition and reap the benefits of a publicly accessible EV charging network.”

For HMLP, the charging stations play a large role in the electric transition and build off of their existing programs. HMLP recently launched its Electrify Hingham program to connect customers with electrification resources like rebates, bill credits, and EV expertise from Hingham Drives Electric, an HMLP outreach program. A customer can estimate their EV costs and savings online for free and then receive additional incentives if they choose to buy electric. Interested parties should contact ev@ene.org to get connected.

“These initiatives, like Electrify Hingham and the installation of our new charging stations, are intended to make electrification easier for all customers,” said Brianna Bennett, Sustainability Coordinator at HMLP. “The EV revolution is here now, and we are excited to partner with FLO in bringing reliable charging solutions to local drivers and visitors of our seaside community as they make the electric transition.”

In addition to being reliable, affordable, and compatible with other popular charging networks, HMLP was impressed with the durability of FLO chargers in cold weather conditions.

“With winter weather just around the corner, it was essential for us to choose EV chargers that could withstand the cold New England climate,” added Bennett. “Not only is FLO the largest EV charging provider in Canada, but their chargers are also reliable in temperatures as low as -40 degrees Fahrenheit, we knew these chargers were up to the task.”
